A Weekend in Bicheno, Tasmania: The Perfect Itinerary

Bicheno doesn't ask much of you. There's no packed schedule, no must-see list that feels like a spreadsheet tick and flick. This little coastal town on Tasmania's east coast has a way of slowing people down - and a weekend here, done right, might just be the reset you didn't know you needed.

Here's how we'd spend 48 hours in Bicheno.

Friday Evening: Arrive and Settle In

There's something about arriving in Bicheno as the afternoon light softens over the Tasman Sea. Check into your accommodation, open the windows (even just for a brief moment, season depending) and let the sound of the coast do its thing.

If you're staying at Casa Collection, pour yourself something cold from the fridge - we love Devil’s Corner - and take a moment on the deck before dinner. After a week of emails and appointments and schedules, you have no doubt earned it.

For your first night, book a table at Le Coq — Bicheno's finest dining experience, where traditional French technique meets modern Australian produce. Order the seasonal suggestion and don't skip dessert - especially if Chef Tristan’s chocolate mousse is on the menu.

Saturday Morning: Chase the Light

Set your alarm early. Bicheno mornings are something else.

Walk down to Waubs Bay before the rest of the world wakes up. The water is impossibly clear and the granite coastline catches the early light in a way that stops you mid-step. Take a dip if you're brave - the Tasman Sea has a way of making you feel completely alive. Just ask the group of local ocean swimmers who gather at 7:30am every day - rain, hail, or Bicheno sunshine.

Pick up coffee from Governörs and wander back along the foreshore. No rush. This is the whole point.

Saturday Mid-Morning: Explore the Coast

After breakfast, head out to explore. Bicheno's natural surroundings are extraordinary and easy to access:

  • The Blowhole — a short walk from town, dramatic at high tide

  • Redbill Beach — a long arc of white sand perfect for a morning walk or surf

  • Douglas-Apsley National Park — just 20 minutes north, ideal for a gorge swim and a proper bushwalk

  • Whalers Lookout — a quick climb with sweeping views over the bay

Saturday Lunch: Eat Well

Bicheno punches well above its weight when it comes to food. Pull up at the Lobster Shack on the foreshore for the freshest local seafood — crayfish, scallops and oysters eaten at a picnic table with the ocean right in front of you. It doesn't get more Tasmanian than this.

Saturday Afternoon: Slow Down

This is the part most itineraries skip - and the part that makes Bicheno special.

Head back to your accommodation for an afternoon of doing very little. Read a book. Have a long bath. If you're staying at The Pool Villa, this is the moment the pool earns its place.

Alternatively, book a treatment at Firefly or Selkie Wellness - remedial massage, sauna and ice bath therapy in the heart of Bicheno. Consider it essential, not indulgent.

Saturday Evening: The Penguins

As dusk falls, make your way down to the foreshore for one of Tasmania's most magical experiences. Every evening, little penguins return from a day at sea and waddle ashore to their burrows - unbothered, unhurried and utterly captivating.

Book with Bicheno Penguin Tours for a guided experience that gets you closer to the action while protecting the colony. It's the kind of thing that stays with you long after you've left.

Sunday Morning: Freycinet Day Trip

Bicheno is perfectly positioned as a base for exploring the broader east coast - and Freycinet National Park is just 45 minutes south. Hike up to the Wineglass Bay Lookout for one of the most photographed views in Australia, or continue down to the beach itself for a swim in that legendary turquoise water. Book a sea kayak tour with Experiential Tasmania if you want to experience the park from the water.

Sunday Afternoon: One Last Swim

Back in Bicheno, squeeze in one last walk along the foreshore before you pack up. Stop into Islander Home Art Fashion, Long Point Surf Shop, or The Society Of The Lost And Found for something beautiful to take home - a Bicheno bumper sticker at the very least. Then drive away slowly. You'll be planning your return before you hit the highway.
