Inside Firefly: Bicheno's Hidden Skin Sanctuary

Tucked away along Harveys Farm Road in Bicheno is a space that feels less like a beauty salon and more like a retreat for the senses. Firefly is the work of a devoted dermal therapist who has built something sublime on this stretch of coast - a cocoon draped in linen and low light where luxury, comfort, and genuine skincare expertise meet. We sat down over coffee on a drizzly Wednesday with the superb woman behind it, Lel Loubser, to learn more about the space, the philosophy, and the journey that brought her here.

A Sanctuary by Design

When asked what kind of space Lel set out to create, the answer is immediate: a sanctuary.

“With Firefly, I wanted to provide a warm, dark, womb-like skin sanctuary where luxury and comfort meet expertise,” Lel explains over sips of espresso. “I have created an immersive, sensory environment where my clients can decompress and let go from the moment they step through the doors.”

It's Lel's barefooted, soothing presence - paired with this attention to atmosphere, not just treatment - that sets Firefly apart. The goal isn't simply to leave with better skin, but to leave having genuinely switched off.

More Than Skin Deep

As a qualified dermal therapist, Lel’s focus is on the overall health of her clients' skin: rejuvenation, improving laxity and hydration, restoring luminosity, and managing specific concerns as they arise. But Firefly's offering extends well beyond facials and skin treatments.

“I also offer relaxation treatments including massage, hot stone therapy, foot rituals, and beauty treatments,” Lel says - rounding out the experience into something closer to full-body restoration than a single skincare service.

The Signature: A Facial Made for You

Ask about Lel’s signature offering, and the answer is facials, but not a one-size-fits-all version.

“I offer a variety thereof and focus on an individualised consultation for each client before we begin a treatment," she explains. “This allows me to guide you as to what will be best for your skin and overall well-being.”

It's a considered, personal approach - each treatment is shaped around the person and their skin needs, rather than a fixed menu. It makes the experience super special and one you will remember long after your Bicheno visit is done.

What's on the Shelves

Firefly's product range reflects the same philosophy as its treatments: quality over quantity, and nothing she wouldn't use herself.

“All the products I stock in Firefly are natural, luxurious, effective, and Australian-made," Lel says. The range spans skin and body brands, artisan soaps, essential oils, balms, and hand-blended teas. “There is something to suit everyone. I only sell what I love.” We dare you not to leave without an elixir or two and ask Lel to see her range of hand-poured beeswax candles.

From South Africa to Bicheno

Lel’s path to Tasmania - and to Firefly - has taken her around the world. Born and trained in South Africa, Lel always knew she wanted to be a therapist. From there, the journey included stints working on cruise ships and in Edinburgh, before love brought her to Tasmania.

Firefly itself didn't start in Bicheno. “I first opened Firefly in Deloraine in north-west Tasmania before relocating to Bicheno,” Lel shares - a move that's brought her sanctuary to the coast it now calls home.

Life Beyond Firefly

Outside the treatment room, life looks a little different - and a lot more grounded.

“When I am not at Firefly, you will find me at home in the bush with my lover and three boys,” Lel says with a stunning smile. “I like to relax by cooking, and luckily, my family likes to eat!” Her husband is currently building their family home amid the trees overlooking Bicheno, and much of her time these days is spent “dreaming of sunlight streaming through glass windows.”

It's a fitting reflection of what drives Lel both at home and at work: “Beauty in every way is what motivates me.”

Lel’s Tip for Visiting Bicheno

So what's Lel’s advice for visitors to Bicheno? Get in the water, even in winter.

“Brave the coldest ocean! Even if it is for a quick dip. I wish I had braved the winter water sooner. It will wash your worries away.”

Sound advice from someone who knows exactly how to help people let go.
